Beer, Death and Tears
By Samuel Taphil King

This poem was written by my son, Sam. He wrote this after watching a reenactment of a tragic event that actually took place in Hillsboro, Oregon where Sam is a Junior in High School.

The road rumbled as
two great beasts lumbered across it.

One of them a beast of innocence.
The other a beast of ignorance.

This was a night of Beer, Death and Tears.

At first it was calm.

Then there was a skidding of tires,
A breaking of metal pitted against metal.
A shattering of glass and peace,
A flowing of gasoline and blood.
A stench of smoke and death,
Gasps of horror,
Screams of grief,
Sobs of agony.

Blood on the pavement,
Blood on the driver’s fate.

Amidst the chaos of sirens and screeching radios,
 the tears of a family
coats the road in despair.

All because of beer

The road rested as two great beasts
at last slumbered.

This poem was written in memory and honor of those who have been
victims of driving under the influence.
